Engineered Hardwood and Large Dogs

Hey Dog Lovers!

Recently, a fellow member of my Bernedoodle Facebook group asked for advice on flooring options that can withstand the wear and tear of large dogs. As a proud owner of a Bernedoodle named Molly, I wanted to share my experience with Shaw-engineered hardwood, which has proven to be an excellent choice in my home.

Why Engineered Hardwood Stands Up to Large Dogs

Durability: Shaw-engineered hardwood is built to last. Its multi-layer construction includes a sturdy core that resists warping and denting. The top veneer is coated with a durable finish that protects against scratches, even from playful paws.

Scratch Resistance: Unlike traditional hardwood, engineered hardwood offers better scratch resistance. The finish is designed to withstand everyday wear and tear, including the occasional enthusiastic play session.

Stability: Engineered hardwood is more stable than solid hardwood, making it less susceptible to damage from temperature and humidity fluctuations—common in homes with active pets.

Ease of Maintenance: Cleaning up after pets is a breeze with engineered hardwood. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping keeps the floor looking new.

Alternatives for Budget-Friendly Options

If you’re looking for more budget-friendly options, both laminate and LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) with a 20-mil wear layer are excellent choices.

Laminate: Modern laminate floors offer impressive durability and scratch resistance. They can mimic the look of natural wood while providing a tough surface that stands up to pet traffic.

LVP: With its waterproof properties and high wear layer, LVP is another fantastic choice for homes with dogs. It’s easy to clean and maintains its appearance over time, even in high-traffic areas.

To illustrate just how well-engineered hardwood holds up, here’s a cute picture of Molly. She’s left paw prints but not a scratch on the floor—proof of its durability!
